Finding work after moving to the UK: Antonia’s story
Antonia had recently moved to the UK from Ukraine and was looking for work. She found out about Making A Difference by attending a virtual information session, then registered on the programme during an appointment at York library.
She was introduced to Jo, her Employment Coach and together they went through Antonia’s goals, then formed an action plan to achieve them. Antonia’s short term goal was to find a role which allowed her to earn money whilst settling into her life in York and helping to build her self-confidence.
In between her sessions with Jo, Antonia was very proactive in searching for work and signed up for a number of local recruitment events including one with a leading retailer.
As a result of this, Jo tailored their next session to focus on interview techniques. In this session, Jo and Antonia practiced typical interview questions that she could be asked at any interview. They also reviewed and practiced some specific questions that she may be asked for a retail role within this particular company. Antonia left that intervention feeling more confident before the recruitment event.
A few days later, Jo received another message from Antonia telling her that she had had an interview with the NHS. Thanks to the interview technique practice she had had with Jo, Antonia felt very prepared for her interview.
In their next session together, Antonia was able to tell Jo the great news that she had been offered the job within the NHS as a healthcare assistant.
About Antonia’s success within the Making A Difference programme, her coach Jo said:
“Antonia has had to adjust to life in England but had a really good approach to looking for work. She took different opportunities that she was offered and worked really hard to find a position. I made sure to keep in touch with her to make sure she was OK and offer help even after she had secured a job.”
“I would definitely recommend contacting Making a Difference if someone needed help in finding a job. My coach Jo was very considerate and helpful. After attending my appointments I did feel really prepared for the job interviews.”
