Elaine – Boosting Confidence and Interview Skills
Elaine (57) from the greater Leeds area had lost confidence after being unemployed for several months and feeling like she was lacking important interview skills. She had held a senior position as a Programme Analyst and was not used to being out of work.
Elaine joined Making a Difference after attending an interview which didn’t produce the outcome she had hoped for. Nonetheless, she felt it was time to brush herself off, get back into the saddle and find full-time employment once again.
How Did We Help?
Elaine met with Employment Coach Tom from Making a Difference. In their first meeting, it became clear that Elaine did not struggle with having the necessary qualifications to find a new job. However, her confidence was bruised from being unemployed.
Whilst being on the programme, Elaine not only wanted to find work but also to boost her confidence and develop her interview skills.
To get Elaine ready for different interview situations, Tom recreated scenarios by setting up regular video calls over Microsoft Teams and Zoom. These mock interviews helped Elaine to reflect on her strengths as well as on any areas for improvement.
Every week, Elaine would call Tom to practice, and she quickly made great progress. She became more aware of her many skills by answering common and industry-specific interview questions. Sure enough, Elaine started to gain more confidence.
Interview Skills Boost for an Experienced Professional
The more precise sessions Elaine got under her belt, the more confident she grew. She aimed high and even applied for roles with greater pay and responsibilities than she had occupied before.
Soon after, Elaine received an interview invite for a Support Officer role with a big supermarket chain, for which she prepped together with Tom. Elaine successfully used all her newfound skills and confidence at her two-stage interview and ultimately got the job!
Coach Tom couldn’t be happier with her progress:
“Elaine was a brilliant participant to support as she was always working hard to improve and very proactive.”
About her time on the Making a Difference programme, Elaine says:
“My outlook has totally changed as the support I received whilst being on the programme did indeed help to improve and build my confidence. I now feel more hopeful about the future. I couldn’t have done this without Tom. He was the encouragement I needed and he provided the right advice when I thought all hope was gone. I would say to anyone considering Making a Difference that it is definitely worth it.”
