Matthew – Changing Careers After Personal Injury

Matthew is a man in his thirties with tan skin and a bald head. His sits at a desk with his laptop, head resting on his hands and smiling towards the camera. One of his eyes is closed from a previous injury and he has a friendly, lopsided smile.

Matthew (32) from Hexham joined Making a Difference seeking support with creating successful applications. Matthew had experienced a personal injury and felt that this impacted his job search significantly.

He wanted to find a job that would work around his health concerns and support his wellbeing.

How Did We Help?

Matthew met with Connor, an Employment Coach at Making a Difference. In their first session, they discussed options for a career change due to the nature of Matthew’s injury. Matthew, while keen to explore new opportunities, also expressed feeling “unsure about the current recruitment standards”.

Having extensive knowledge of the labour market, Connor was able to reassure Matthew about his career prospects. Together, they discussed Matthew’s skill set and understanding of different job-searching methods. Following this, Matthew set himself achievable goals and actions to take for the next step on his career journey.

Over the following weeks, Matthew learned how to tailor his CV to different vacancies using the resources provided by Making a Difference. In additional one-to-one sessions, he also created a bespoke cover letter with support from Connor.

Returning to Work After Personal Injury

It was not long before Matthew received an invitation for an interview within Market Research. Although feeling “nervous” and “unsure of what to expect”, Matthew was confident about putting his new interview skills to use.

One technique which is commonly used by applicants is the STAR method which helps to plan your answers for an interview situation, incorporating any relevant previous experience.

Following his interview, Matthew learned that he had been successful and secured employment as a Market Researcher. He is ready to embrace this new challenge and the exciting prospects of a new career path!

Regarding his experience working with his Coach, Matthew says:

“Thanks to the informative support from Connor, I feel far more confident and prepared for interviews. This has been a great help to me.”
