Daria – Finding Work as a Ukrainian Refugee

After moving to Bradford as a Ukrainian refugee due to the ongoing conflict, Daria was keen to restart her career as a dentist.

Sana, her JCP Work Coach introduced her to Liam, a Making a Difference Employment Coach. Liam already had connections in this sector, so he was the perfect choice for Daria.

Together, they identified Daria’s career goals in the UK and got straight to work!

How Did We Help?

In his first 1:2:1 session with Daria, Liam provides Daria with information on the UK job market. He highlighted the differences between the UK market and the market in Ukraine to best prepare her for job hunting in a new country.

Liam also provided Daria with support creating her first CV, a completely new concept to Daria as they are not commonly used in Ukraine.

They designed a CV which would best showcase Daria’s skills and experience within the dentistry sector.

Next, they identified that a significant barrier to Daria finding work as a dentist in the UK would be her English level. Liam supported Daria to research a range of courses which would give her an English language qualification.

Professional Networking in a New Country

Liam also supported Daria to access the hidden job market by using established contacts to help her network. After working together for several weeks covering topics of job searching, application and preparing for interviews, Daria was offered an interview for a position as dental nurse.

She was successful in her interview and secured a position as a dental nurse within a local company. Her new employer will provide her with the further support she needs to get on the General Dental Council register and be able to practice dentistry in the UK.

When asked about her time on the Making a Difference programme, Daria said:

“I didn’t know how to get into dentistry in the UK until I met Liam at the Job Centre. The support I received from Making a Difference has been very welcome – even though I am very independent it was good to get a push from someone.”

When asked if she would recommend Making a Difference, she said:

“I would recommend to anyone.”

Liam commented about Daria’s time on the programme:

“It has been a pleasure to support Daria into employment and to see her gain employment with a wonderful local employer who is going to support her ambitions further.”
