Andrew – Finding Work After Long-Term Unemployment

Andrew, age 55 from Sussex, had been in unemployment for over a year when he heard about the Making a Difference programme through Change Grow Live support services. He wanted to find a job and was unsure of where to start, feeling lost and as though the system had failed him.

Previously, Andrew had worked in construction, including in supervisory and management positions. However, he was unsure about what he would like to do for full-time work this time around. He was introduced to Making a Difference’s Employment Coach Chelsea. Andrew felt that his skills and interests would be suited to a maintenance type role and Chelsea tailored her advice to this sector.

How Did We Help?

In their first session together, Andrew and Chelsea discussed his barriers to employment and how Making a Difference could support him with these. One of his main obstacles was Andrew’s limited access to computers and his limited Digital Skills. This prevented him from finding and applying for work online.

Andrew accessed IT skills support through Making a Difference. This allowed him to navigate the internet confidently and apply for jobs. Chelsea also provided Andrew with 1:1 support in writing strong job applications, preparing for interviews and interview techniques. This has helped to boost Andrew’s confidence in not only navigating applying for jobs. He also grew more confident in himself, his skills and his experience.

Accessing Skills Support during Unemployment

Andrew feels that the Making a Difference programme has contributed to his confidence growing and he has become more focused. Andrew is now a lot clearer in his direction. He feel more hopeful compared to the start of his unemployment.

About the impact participation in the Making a Difference programme has had on him, Andrew commented:

“I feel that this program has filled the gap between finding jobs, applying and being interviewed. To a lot of people this is a small thing, but to some, like me, it’s very intimidating and can rob some people of their confidence just thinking about it.

The Making A Difference Program has helped me to understand and has taught me these skills. More importantly this has been done on a one-to-one basis at a pace that meant I could both learn and retain these skills.

This has given me back my confidence in myself and is positively impacting my quality of life in general. Although I am still job seeking, I am more positive and confident within myself which means I have broadened my job search.

I would encourage anyone who is feeling anxious or intimidated by the job market to contact Making a Difference. Because it has made a difference for me!”
