Joshua – Finding Your First Job in the IT Sector

Joshua is a young East Asian man with glasses and a friendly smile. He is in an office and holding a laptop.

Joshua (21) from Horsham had recently left education but was unable to secure work in the IT sector with his Level 3 Qualification. He had been working as a warehouse operative when he was referred by the National Careers Service but wanted to take the next career step.

Joshua was unsure how to approach his first industry job and sought out additional support from the Making a Difference programme. He was hoping to put his qualification to good use and start a career in IT.

How Did We Help?

Joshua got in touch with Nicola, an Employment Coach at Making a Difference. They established that Joshua’s goal was to improve his job-searching skills and to find full-time work in the IT industry.

To take his first steps, Joshua attended Horsham Job Club, a free drop-in session hosted by Making a Difference. There, he learned to develop his interview skills which gave him the confidence boost he was looking for.

Following this, Joshua regularly met with Nicola to update his CV and cover letter. This allowed him to tailor his skills and experience to specific jobs in the IT sector and to suitable employers.

Working in the IT Sector After Education

This approach together with the Labour Market Information (LMI) Nicola provided allowed Joshua to speculatively apply to several companies. A speculative application is the process of actively approaching employers to seek out opportunities that have not been advertised.

Sometimes, it is possible to find roles that are not published on any job boards. This might be because of where employers are in their recruitment process or because they are unaware of a skills gap in their workforce.

These key factors played heavily in Joshua’s favour. He soon got an interview invite with a company which had not yet advertised their vacancy.

From there, it didn’t take long until Joshua received a job offer!

Regarding his experience with Making a Difference, Joshua said:

“I found that the one-to-one sessions were extremely helpful. If someone was thinking about going on the program, I would say that it is very supportive and that they should give it a shot.”
