Karl – From Sending Applications to Receiving a Job Offer

Karl is a middle-aged man with tanned skin and dark hair as well as a grey beard. He is sitting in front of a laptop in a plaid shirt and smiled confidently into the camera.

63-year-old Karl from Northumberland joined Making a Difference for support in finding work. He was submitting lots of job applications but had not been receiving an interview invite or job offer.

These rejections left Karl feeling frustrated and despondent. To continue his journey and move forward into work, he signed up to Making a Difference for additional support.

How Did We Help?

Karl was introduced to Connor, an Employment Coach at Making a Difference. In their initial meeting, they talked through what Karl was currently doing to find work. Together they identified that Karl was taking a very proactive and motivated approach to his job search already. This included him attending local job fairs and looking at a multitude of job boards, recruitment sites and social media adverts.

Despite this, he wasn’t securing any interviews, so Karl and Connor decided to go back to the drawing board. They made a list of goals Karl would like to pursue while on the Making a Difference programme and identified actions they would take to help him achieve these.

As Karl’s main goal was securing full-time work, he created a list with Connor of all his transferable skills that he had acquired through previous roles. This included, for example, sales and business development experience in several sectors in his home country of South Africa.

In subsequent sessions, Karl worked on developing his CV and cover letters. While it is great having a well-structured and sound CV, it is important to make adaptations to each advertised job description. Karl began tailoring his applications to the exact requirements of each job role using the information provided by recruiting companies.

How To Progress From Application to Job Offer

Shortly after, Karl started to notice a significant and positive improvement in the success of his applications. Through working with Connor, he had adopted a “quality over quantity approach”, which meant he was focussing his energy and attention on only the most suitable job roles. This enabled him to submit high quality applications and really cater to the individual person specifications.

Because of this, Karl’s confidence started to grow and he became more comfortable submitting applications independently. He even installed a personal tracking system to keep himself organised while job searching.

And his efforts soon paid off. After submitting an application to an organisation in the Education sector, Karl finally received a job offer!

His Employment Coach Connor, congratulates him on this fantastic result. He says:

“Thanks to his determination and proactivity, Karl showed outstanding engagement with the Making a Difference programme and achieved the result he strived for!”

About the support he received through the programme, Karl said: “Thanks so much to Connor for his advice and support. It has helped me become far more prepared in navigating the UK job market and understanding how to improve the success of my applications!”
