Looking for work with a health condition: Mark’s story

Mark, aged 56 from the North East, referred himself to the Making a Difference programme when he was looking for a job that was manageable with his long-term health issues. Employment Coach Lydia made contact and listened to Mark to find out how she could best support him to get back into work.

Lydia worked with Mark to help him to understand how to effectively use the job search engines available in his local area and how to filter out jobs which were not suitable for him based on his skills, experience and health needs. In their sessions, Lydia and Mark looked at a number of job listings and discussed their suitability and how Mark could apply.

When he experienced some issues during his time within the programme, Lydia was able to provide support and act as someone independent he could talk to.

Following his participation in the Making A Difference programme, Mark has now secured a job that he enjoys doing and he credits the support he got from Lydia as key to him being successful in getting back into work.

Mark said:

“With my health issues I have been weary about getting into work but Lydia always took it at my own pace and made sure I didn’t feel overwhelmed with anything. My employment coach was helpful and polite and so down to earth. I couldn’t fault her. I’m now in a job that I love and without the support I got from Lydia I don’t think I wouldn’t have been able to do it”.
