Returning to work after the pandemic

After being out of work for some time due to the pandemic, Steve, age 51 from Surrey, was looking to return to his previous work as a scaffolder. He was referred to the ReThink course by Making a Difference as his Job Centre Work Coach knew he wanted support in gaining permanent employment.

ReThink is a short, intensive course of workshops, the focus of which can vary depending on the participants’ needs. The attendees also access 1:1 support from Employment Coaches throughout the course.

Steve was introduced to Pauline, a Making a Difference Employment Coach, who ran the course and provided 1:1 support.

Overcoming barriers to work

A significant barrier to Steve finding permanent work was that he did not have copies of the relevant identification documents and qualification evidence he needed to supply employers. Pauline supported Steve to contact the Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme so he could obtain copies of his qualification certificates. She also contacted the DVLA to ask them to issue Steve with a new driving licence.

Pauline also supported Steve to research relevant courses that he could attend to build on his previous qualifications. They then arranged for him to attend a Scaffolding Operative Training Scheme course. Steve enjoyed all of the workshops he attended and added value to the dynamics of the group.

Clearer goals

By the end of the course, he found that his participation in the Making a Difference programme had made a significant impact on his life and has given him a much clearer idea of his career goals and what he needs to do to achieve them.

About his experience of the Making a Difference programme, Steve said:

“I have got more done in the past two weeks than in the last six months. I now know exactly what I need to do in order for me to get back to work. I feel a lot more positive and really feel like I am heading in the right direction.

I would advise anyone to take part in this programme. The guidance and support has given me a new lease of life.”
