Julie – Starting a Career in a New Sector After Redundancy
Julie, aged 60 from Leeds, was unemployed after experiencing redundancy in her previous long-term role. She had not looked for work for many years and lacked confidence in herself.
Julie needed support and guidance on where to start and how to navigate the job market. She turned to Making a Difference, having met the team at a local jobs fair in Leeds. She registered onto the programme to get support in her journey back into work, ideally in an entirely different sector.
How Did We Help?
Julie met with her Employment Coach, Jill in weekly online sessions. Specifically, these sessions were held over Microsoft Teams – a platform Julie was unfamiliar with previously. Jill supported Julie with guidance on CV and cover letter writing, as well as job searching and submitting applications.
Together, they reviewed Julie’s many transferable skills brought over from her old job, like her experience in administration. They also identified that her skills, experience and interests would fit a role as a funeral arranger.
Once Julie had started to gain more confidence following her redundancy, her sessions with Jill became less frequent and and she started applying for roles independently. She was able to apply the skills she had learnt through Making A Difference and submitted applications for a several roles. Ultimately, Julie successfully secured an interview for a funeral arranger role.
How To Find a Job After Redundancy
Jill supported Julie to prepare for her interview, practicing interview skills and techniques. Clearly, Julie was able to put these to good use, because she ended up being successful at interview. She is now settling into her new role as a funeral arranger and is looking forward to make a difference to people during a difficult time.
Following her amazing progress, Julie encourages people to join the programme, stating: “The advice and guidance is very clear and straight forward. The support was tailored and personal to my needs which I was able to take away and apply.”
Her Employment Coach Jill expresses her satisfaction with Julie’s growth: “I have particularly enjoyed working with Julie. She would take away the advice and guidance provided and then independently apply it to the task she was doing.”
