Silvia – Starting a Career in Health & Social Care

Silvia is a smiling woman in her 30s with dark hair and olive skin. She is making a home visit to a customer and showing her work ID.

39-year-old Silvia from East Sussex had been out of work for a few years whilst raising her son after moving to the UK from Italy. She felt uncertainty at the prospect of working in a new country and needed support in navigating the British labour market.

Silvia had already worked on creating a CV in English and wanted to find a job in the health and social care sector.

How Did We Help?

When Silvia attended a local careers fair she met Jack, a Making a Difference Employment Coach. After an initial conversation, Silvia decided she would like to join the programme to receive one-to-one support and guidance from Jack.

As Silvia reported struggling with her confidence, Jack suggested she try volunteering in her community to get the ball rolling. Silvia promptly found an organisation that provides support for women that she was very fond of.

Together with Jack, she created a bespoke and tailored application. They also practised different interview situations and questions when Silvia received an invitation.

Silvia was successful at the interview and started volunteering with the charity. She was able to improve her English skills as well as her transferrable skills. This was a great first step for Silvia towards a career in the health and social care sector.

Volunteering as a Stepping Stone to a Career in Social Care

Following Silvia’s initial success with securing a volunteering role, she started working more extensively on her CV. This allowed her to reflect on her work history and think about the skills and experiences she has developed over the years.

At this stage of her journey, Silvia could already see the changes in herself and her confidence. She realised she already possessed many transferable skills from previous roles. If used and presented effectively, those same skills could help get her where she wanted to be.

As Silvia continued to work with Jack, she applied for health and social care jobs, always adjusting her application to each new role. When she once again received an interview invitation, Silvia prepared and planned with Jack.

This helped to boost Silvia’s confidence and feelings of preparedness. And finally, we are happy to share that Silvia was, again, successful at her interview and in getting the job!

Here is what Silvia said about this new chapter in her life and about her time on the Making a Difference programme.

“Jack helped me to create a proper CV and find work. He has given me renewed focus and direction. I wasn’t sure about what path to take, and I needed to find the right balance between work and family. Jack helped me find a proper career path and not just any old job. I am happy that I found something to help me progress.”
